Confirmation

The baptismal promises of a person who is baptized as an infant, or at a very young age, are made by one or more parents and (or) sponsors. These adults as well as those present at the baptism then assume responsibility to raise the baptized person in the church.

When the one who was baptized approaches adolescence, the church offers that person the opportunity to publicly confirm the promises of baptism. Confirmation celebrates this occasion of affirmation of baptism in the life of the individual and the church.

A two-year course of study educates and prepares individuals for their affirmation of baptism. The first year of confirmation study (about 9th grade) covers the primary areas of the Christian faith. The second year of confirmation study (about 10th grade) pairs the confirmand with an adult church member to be their mentor and to explore service, the broader church and the depths of their personal faith.
